New Zealand has a long history of motivated and self supported individual athletes setting out to try their luck on the international biathlon circuit. Since the late 80's Kiwis have set out in ones and twos to race at youth, junior and sometimes senior levels. At the age of 17 Campbell began his quest on the international stage. He gained selection for the Youth Olympics at Lausanne, Switzerland and promptly achieved a national record by finishing 4th to the amazement of the rest of the biathlon world. In the 2020/2021 season, racing at the senior level in the IBU Cup in Arber, Germany despite being only 18, Campbell finished 5th in the Individual race with a near perfect shooting score.
In 2021/2022 season, Campbell decided to step up to the top level - The World Cup - and in doing so became the youngest competitor this year. The results didn't take long to come - with a season highlight being 15th at the Ruhpolding World Cup in January 2022.
Campbell also attended the Beijing Winter Olympics with the highlight being 32nd place in the 20km Individual race - again as the youngest athlete in the field.
In 2022/23, Campbell raced the full World Cup program for his second year. During the year he achieved a string of top results with two big highlights - 20th place in the World Championships at Oberhof and winner of the World Junior Championships in Shchuchinsk! This latter result was exceptional, being the first time a Southern Hemisphere athlete has ever won a medal in an IBU race. A phenomenal achievement...!
Despite losing Campbell to his 'other' nationality - the USA, we at Biathlon New Zealand are still fiercely proud of him. Campbell is still a Wanaka Biathlon Club member and we are delighted with his onward progress as a US Biathlon team member. The future is bright for this amazing talent!
